Some strange or unusual SCOBY growth but No Mold on these Normal Kombucha SCOBY formations When just starting to brew, one of the most difficult challenges is overcoming the fear of mold. When first spotting things in the brew like the images below, it is common to be concerned. No worries! These are all NORMAL Kombucha SCOBY formations of young cultures, just starting to fill in completely and make a solid layer on top of the brew. Some of the below photos show collections of yeast, which also can cause concern but are not a problem and often form along with normal Kombucha SCOBY. It’s true, some of these lumpy new SCOBY formations are just odd looking! But remember, mold on Kombucha is always dry and fuzzy, and the in the below pictures you will see that the formations are slick and wet or smooth, even when they darker cultures are showing through the new SCOBY growth or large areas of yeast get trapped below the surface and appear green or blue.
